We would like to give you a few advices, which will be useful to any company, buying in steel in coils. The most important in choice of sheet-metal it is not cost per one ton of metal, but amount of square meters which you will be able to get in the total from this ton for offered price. Here a few key moments on which it is necessary to pay attention:
1. Always pay regard to admittances of the steel thickness, which is guaranteed by a factory-producer or your supplier, because in total, you risk to get more expensive cost of square meter of products. So, many steel makers in the CIS, producing the zincked and painted rental, work on standards GOST, that supposes admittance on a thickness became to +0,08, I.e. if you purchased a steel roll in a thickness 0,45 mm, in fact can get 0,53 mm. In the total, from one ton of metal you will get on 40 m2 less than, and this is an enormous loss for the producer of the finished products.
2. Therefore it is very important to know possible amount of defect material in party from maker. Rolling and coloring of metal is a mass production, and as in any production there are norms of defect. In the steel coil it is the first roll of the coil, that usually related to transporting and last roll that related to the overload of metal by an autoloader. In a very high-quality steel defect, as a rule, absents; in the steel of “standard” quality – makes no more than 4% from party, that fully acceptable number. In an “off-grade” cheap steel the amount of defect may be 30% and more! So it goes out, that buying cheap steel 0,45 mm thickness of doubtful quality, you can lose 100 sq.m per one ton !!! There also can be shabbiness, sticking is paints and other mechanical defects, related to the bad packing.
3. Purchasing prepainted steel, check, whether zincking, in-use as foundation for painting is trained. Training is the special treatment of zincked steel, as a result the structure of zinc coverage acquires the washed out mat surface – so adhesion gets better with paint. If the zincked coverage was not trained, in course of time there may be removing layer by layer of paint. Finding out whether zinc is trained or not, is possible only in laboratory terms. However, even at simple examination of standard with a naked eye, evidently, that the painted untrained steel, as a rule, has an uneven surface – a paint is inflicted on it influxes, that talks either about application of the untrained basis or about the uneven causing of paint.
4. It is necessary to know that shallow traders known sometimes to be selling an off-grade steel under the guise of «Severstal», «National» (India) or some other steel already tested at the market. Therefore always require quality certificates and exactly on those coils which you purchased (the numbers of coils, which must coincide with numbers, indicated on the tallies of coils, must be indicated in a certificate).
5. Always remember that business, related to the steel and products made from it is long-term business. And it is impossible to examine it as «now bought cheap, and tomorrow, if it will be cheaper, will purchase from the other». Such logic must not be present for people which want to build the business on long years. Why? Long and mutually beneficial relationships with a supplier are needed, because a supplier in same queue sets the same relationships with a factory, he can plan and beforehand place the orders. A factory in same queue classifies a client as reliable and priority. Right there partner relations begin!
And remember: Disappointment from low quality lasts longer, than joy from a low price.
